Golfo di Barttti

Location: Tuscany
Village type: Tents
Year opened: 1951
Year closed: 1956

We carefully explored the Mediterranean coast. Without hesitation, we chose the Golfo di Baratti, located on the mainland, opposite the island of Elba and 60 km south of Pisa.

Trident No. 3 – April 1951

A little history: We owe the discovery of the Golfo di Baratti site to Dimitri PHILIPOFF. After being part of the Olympic Club adventure, he joined the Club Méditerranée at the beginning of 1951. At the request of Gérard Blitz, he was tasked with discovering a site that could accommodate a village. The choice of Spain was not retained because the Spanish authorities were dragging their feet, so Italy and more precisely the Tuscan region was chosen for its ease of access, its climate and its Mediterranean coastline. Golfo di Baratti was found in 2 days. The commune of Piombino, where Baratti beach is located, is politically communist. Dimitri PHILIPOFF being of Russian nationality, he was received and treated as a "comrade" by the political authorities of the commune. They offered him every facility without worrying about knowing that he had fled the Soviet regime after the Russian revolution!

Just as with Alcudia, Robert Baudin was responsible for building the facilities. The village was imperfect, the sand on the beach was black and sticky to the feet, but this did not prevent the success of Golfo di Baratti.

The village closed in 1956.

Personalities who have marked the history of Baratti and Club Méditerranée.

Dimitri PHILIPOFF: Discoverer of the site in 1951 and village chief until 1956.

Jean Pierre BECRET: was appointed interim village chief during Dimitri PHILIPOFF's illness

Dimitri KOULIKOVSKY: He is a prince of Russian origin. In the village, he is the "Transport" man, organizing excursions, and negotiating rates with Tuscan museums. He also sets up the entire rail transport organization for the Club Méditerranée in Italy. In a way, he is the inventor of the Club's special trains.

Jean BALANDJIAN: Arriving in 1951 in the village as GM, he made a name for himself thanks to his talent as a singer and musician. He never left the Club, and in 1955 became village chief of Djerba (the Faithful).

  1. Good morning

First of all, a big thank you for collier bar.
I am writing to ask you to kindly correct a small error in your text: the name of Robert Baudin, who in fact built Alcudia (where I went...) then Baratti and who can be found in other villages as well, is written BAUDIN (there is no E).
    Thanking you,
    sincerely,
    His son: JP Baudin
